We invite you to come study the Bible and worship with us as we strive to go forward by going back to the Bible.
Going Forward By Going Back To The Bible
The Greenville church of Christ would like to cordially invite you to come study the Bible and worship with us.
- We insist on speaking as the Bible speaks (1 Pet. 4:11).
- We insist on being silent where the Bible is silent (Lev. 10:1-2; Deut. 17:3; Heb. 7:14).
- We insist on doing Bible things in Bible ways (Jer. 6:16; 1 Pet. 2:21; Jn. 13:15; Phil. 4:9; Heb. 8:5).
- We insist on calling Bible things by Bible names (Col. 3:17; Acts 4:12).
- We believe we are called by and through the teachings of the gospel (2 Thess. 2:14), not by our own opinions (Isa. 55:8-9) or by what seems right (Prov. 14:12).
- We believe in plain Bible teaching and preaching on all religious and moral matters (2 Tim. 4:2).
- We believe that we must have Bible authority for all things done in the name of religion (Col. 3:17; 2 Jn. 9).
The Whole Counsel Of God
We believe in the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27; 2 Tim. 3:16-17), including God's instruction for man's salvation. Salvation or redemption has two parts: God's part and man's part.
God's Part
- Saved by God's grace (Eph. 2:8; Acts 15:11).
- Saved by God's mercy (Titus 3:5).
- Saved by the blood of Christ (Eph. 1:7; 1 Pet. 1:18-20; Rev. 1:5).
- Saved by the gospel of Christ (Rom. 1:16; 1 Cor. 15:1-2; Jas. 1:21).
Man's Part
- Hear the gospel and call on the name or authority of the Lord's gospel (Rom. 10:1-3, 13-17; 2 Thess. 2:14; Acts 4:12; Matt. 7:21).
- Believe in Christ (Acts 16:31; Jn. 8:24; Heb. 11:6; Jn. 3:16, 18).
- Repent, which is a change of mind that leads to a change in action (Lk. 13:3; Acts 17:30; Matt. 21:28-30).
- Confess Christ (Matt. 10:32-33; Rom. 10:9-10; Acts 8:37).
- Be baptized (1 Pet. 3:21; Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16).
- Live in righteousness, hope, and faithful endurance (Acts 10:35; Rev. 20:12; Rom. 8:24; Matt. 10:22; Rev. 2:10).
What God Has Joined Together
To abide in the doctrine of Christ (2 Jn. 9), one must accept and do all of God's instructions, not just one or some of them. One cannot add to nor take away from His Word (Deut. 4:2; Prov. 30:6; Rev. 22:18-19).
- Belief is coupled with baptism (Mk. 16:16).
- Repentance is coupled with baptism (Acts 2:38).
- Confession is coupled with baptism (Acts 8:35-39).
Simply Christians
We believe that God adds the saved to His church (Acts 2:47, 41). Man does not add anyone to the church or to the book of life.
- Christ built the church (Matt. 16:18).
- Christ purchased the church with His own blood (Acts 20:28).
- Christ gave Himself for the church (Eph. 5:25).
- Christ is the chief cornerstone and foundation of the church (Eph. 2:19-22; 1 Cor. 3:11).
- Collectively, we call ourselves the church of Christ (Rom. 16:16) because the church belongs to Christ.
The Bible produces Christians (Acts 11:26; Acts 26:28; 1 Pet. 4:16), not human religious names.
Worship And Work
We believe that the purpose of the church is to glorify God (Eph. 3:21), and we worship God according to New Testament practice.
- In spirit and in truth (Jn. 4:23-24).
- Remembering the Lord's death upon the first day of the week (1 Cor. 11:23-29; Acts 20:7).
- Praying, reading, teaching, and preaching (1 Tim. 2:1; Acts 2:42; 1 Tim. 4:13; 2 Tim. 4:2-4).
- Singing and making melody in the heart to the Lord (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16; 1 Cor. 14:15).
- Giving as each has prospered and purposed in the heart (1 Cor. 16:2; 2 Cor. 9:7).
We believe the work of the church is to preach to the lost, edify the saved, and provide benevolence to needy Christians according to New Testament teaching.
Local Church Autonomy
We believe that each local church does its own work autonomously, according to its own ability, not through another local church or a man-made organization. Elders, bishops, and overseers are limited in oversight to the flock among them (Acts 20:17, 28; 1 Pet. 5:2).
- The local church may support preaching and pay a preacher for his work (1 Cor. 9:4-14; Phil. 4:15; 2 Cor. 11:8-9).
- The sponsoring church arrangement, papal oversight system, and one-man pastoral system are not found in the New Testament pattern.
- The church Jesus purchased with His own blood is the institution authorized to sound out the Word of the Lord (Acts 20:28; 1 Thess. 1:8).
Invitation
We cordially invite you to come study the Bible and worship God with us.
- As we strive to build one another up in the most holy faith (Jude 20).
- As we strive to grow in grace and knowledge (2 Pet. 3:18).
- As we strive to endure in spiritual blessings until the end (Eph. 1:3; Matt. 10:22).
